The Houston Astros recently played their final home game of the 2018 season and one of their best fans had a bad day at the park due to another Astros fan.

According to a video on Twitter posted by Stephen Morgan of FOX 26, an eight-year-old Houston Astros fan named Chloe was cheering for her home town team before she was yelled at by another Astros fan.

The awful response from an adult fan to a child fan caused Chloe to immediately stop cheering.  To make things worse, Chloe’s mom later confirmed that her child suffers from  Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD).

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “DMDD is a childhood condition of extreme irritability, anger, and frequent, intense temper outbursts.”

Although the adult fan would most likely be unaware of this condition at the time of the incident, it does not make sense for an adult to tell any child to stop cheering for their hometown team at a baseball game.  If anything, the fan should have privately spoken to Chloe’s mom about any issue before addressing the child directly.

Craig Hlavaty of the Houston Chronicle was able to speak with Iram Kazimi, a Houston-area child psychologist, about how the adult fan addressed the issue through Chron.com.  According to Iram Kazimi, “Once you raise your voice most kids are not able to even process what you are even saying, some studies even say that yelling is just as bad as physical discipline.”

Kazami continued, “If there is an issue, always address the adult.  You can also remove yourself from the situation too.  And besides, if you are at a game, you should expect people to be rowdy or loud.”

The good news about this situation is the support Chloe is receiving from the Houston Astros players that she was cheering before this incident occurred.  Lance McCullers Jr.took to Twitter to defend Chloe:

This is a great use of social media by McCullers to stick up for a passionate fan while also offering her tickets to a game one of the American League Division Series that will take place at Minute Maid Park against the Cleveland Indians.  It would be great if Chloe is able to accept the tickets and cheer loudly for the Astros in a playoff atmosphere!

It would also be great if this moment can be used as a teaching tool for all adults to learn it is not okay to yell at a child.  As previously mentioned, if an adult has an issue with a child, discussing the issue with the child’s parent or guardian privately is the proper response.  The adult can simply get up and leave the situation or involve a stadium attendant that can appropriately assist if needed.
