Victor Victor Mesa, Victor Mesa Jr to have showcase on October 5
A trio of Cuban prospects, headlined by Victor Victor Mesa, will have a showcase for major league teams on October 5.
At this point, there is not question that Victor Victor Mesa is the top international prospect on the market. A 22 year old centerfielder, Mesa had been a part of the Cuban National Series since he was 16 years old, a phenom in his native country. When he defected in May, along with his brother, Victor Mesa Jr., the elder Mesa instantly became the top international prospect.
Declared a free agent, it is now time for Mesa to begin fielding offers. He, along with his brother and another Cuban prospect, Sandy Gaston, will have a showcase in Miami on October 5, as they look to secure their future.

The elder Mesa is certainly a talented player. He is considered to be a superlative defensive outfielder with a stellar arm, perhaps a future Gold Glove candidate. He also has incredible speed, which he displayed in his final season in Cuba, when he stole 40 bases in 70 games. There are questions about his hitting and power, but there is no questioning Mesa’s potential and bloodlines.
His younger brother, Victor Mesa Jr., is an intriguing prospect, although he is not considered to be the same caliber player that his brother is. A switch hitter, the younger Mesa is also an outfielder, but would be a long term project. Although he was not on any of the top international prospect lists, his bloodlines, and the ability of his elder brother, make him an intriguing player in his own right.
Sandy Gaston, a right handed pitcher, is another incredibly intriguing talent. There is no questioning his fastball, which consistently sits in the upper 90s, and can top out at 100 MPH although he is only 16 years old. Gaston does not have much in the way of secondary offerings, which is to be expected from a youngster who throws that hard. He also has difficulty with his command, making his future role, either as a starter or reliever, a point of contention. Nonetheless, with such a high octane fastball, Gaston will attract plenty of attention.
A trio of talented Cuban prospects will have their showcase on October 5. While Victor Victor Mesa will be the headliner, the other players are worth a look as well.
