Kansas City Royals outfielder Alex Gordon is adding another accomplishment to his resume, as he will drive the pace car for the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Professional sports in Kansas City have become a very tight knit community. It is common to see members of the Kansas City Royals at Chiefs games, and vice versa. They are always there, cheering one another on, a part of the community of fans.

That camaraderie and togetherness extend to other sports as well. Members of the Royals and Chiefs have taken turns driving the pace car at Kansas Speedway, with Drew Butera, Derrick Brooks, and Anthony Sherman taking the wheel.

On October 21, another Kansas City legend will be setting the pace. Royals All Star Alex Gordon will be driving the pace car for the Hollywood Casino 400, one of the more important races in the NASCAR playoff. With this race, four drivers will be eliminated from the postseason.

It certainly makes sense for Gordon to be a part of the festivities. He is one of the more decorated players in Royals history, ranking fourth in franchise history with 173 homers and sixth with 1461 hits. Gordon is a three time All Star and a five time Gold Glove winner, taking home the Platinum Glove in 2014.

Gordon has been an important part of Kansas City sports. His prowess in the outfield was a key part of the Royals return to relevance, and their focus on speed and defense during their own trips to the postseason. He has hit three homers in postseason play, including one in the World Series against the Mets.

While this one moment will not necessarily be anything that Gordon is remembered for, it is just another example of the bond between the players and the city. Players like Gordon have become icons, not just for their play on the field, but because of what they mean off of it as well. In being a part of the community, and by cheering one another on, the players have furthered that relationship.
