The New York Yankees hope to stave off MLB playoffs elimination in game 4 against the Boston Red Sox in Yankee Stadium.

For each game this postseason, you will find a “game thread” here on Call To The Pen. This will be a spot that you can count on fans of the game to be around for chat on the game as it happens throughout the MLB playoffs in the month of October, all the way through the World Series.

The biggest rivalry in the game entered Monday’s game tied 1-1 before the Red Sox completely blew away the Yankees. Now the Yankees are backed against a wall and need a win in game 4 to stay alive!

For the Yankees

The Yankees send their veteran stopper to the mound in CC Sabathia. Sabathia has been borderline elite following a Yankees loss in his time in New York.

The Yankees will run out a bit of a change in their lineup tonight with Brett Gardner in left field and batting 9th, injecting a bit of speed into the lineup that it typically lacks. Neil Walker also takes over for Miguel Andujar at third base.

For the Red Sox

Boston held back Rick Porcello for game 4, and that decision is looking fortuitous now as they have their top right-handed arm going in a possible elimination game. Porcello has faced the Yankees 4 times this season, and he’s been very good against them, going 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA over 23 1/3 innings, with a 0.64 WHIP and a 4/20 BB/K ratio. Only Aaron Judge has really hit him well on the year.

The Red Sox lineup has seen Sabathia three times this season, putting up 7 runs over 14 innings against the Yankees lefty. Steve Pearce will get the start at first base with CC on the mound, and he will hit third in the lineup.
