MLB impact: Ranking baseball’s decision makers for 2018: Part 1
By Bill Felber
30. Dan Duquette, Baltimore Orioles, -14.0 games
The Orioles have already announced that Duquette will not be returning for 2019.
Like Moore and Alderson, Duquette’s 2018 performance is statistically the worst of a lengthy career, in this case dating back to Montreal in the early 1990s. As you might guess given the Orioles’ 47-115 finish, there were few highlights to Duquette’s record.
But just to synopsize the gory details…
Duquette acquired 13 Orioles from other teams during the 2018 season. Eleven produced negative values, the net amounting to -4.4 games. The trade of Manny Machado (+2.1 for the Dodgers) obviously also hurt.
He signed or re-signed nine players to new contracts, notably pitchers Andrew Cashner, Alex Cobb, and Chris Tillman. The net impact of the 9 was -3.6 games; the net impact of the three most widely heralded was -3.3.
Duquette used 14 first-year farm system products, and their net impact was -4.3 games. It is at least theoretically possible that one or more of those 14 may eventually blossom into a regular and possibly even a star. Here are the names of the 14: Chance Sisco, Cedric Mullins, D.J. Stewart, Austin Wynns, Steve Wilkerson, Yefry Ramirez, John Means, Josh Rogers, Donnie Hart, Tanner Scott, Jimmy Yacabonis, David Hess, Paul Fry, and Ryan Meisinger. Which one(s) are headed for stardom?
