The Boston Red Sox potentially have a plan to make sure they have the best lineup possible in the World Series.
One of the biggest disadvantages that the American League faces when it comes to the World Series involves playing in National League parks. The designated hitter is eliminated, removing a key weapon from the lineup. For a team like the Boston Red Sox, who have J.D. Martinez as their primary DH, that loss can make a tremendous difference.
In order to put together the best possible lineup in those NL parks, the Red Sox may have a solution. As strange as it may sound, manager Alex Cora is considering playing outfielder Mookie Betts at second in those contests.

This would not be the first time that Betts made an appearance at second. He was originally an infielder when selected in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft, and transitioned to the outfield in 2014. He even made 14 major league appearances at second that year, showing league average range over that time. And, he did play at second for six innings this season, handling both chances flawlessly.
While such a move would keep both the bat of Martinez, and the glove of Jackie Bradley Jr.in the lineup, but there is risk involved. Will Betts be able to handle playing the keystone in such a situation, considering how little he has played there recently? And, will Bradley’s bat continue to be white hot, necessitating his presence in the lineup?
These are the types of decisions that can turn the tide of a series. A crucial error can change the tide of a game, and while Betts is stellar in the outfield, he will need to knock the rust off at second. There may not be enough time for that to happen.
Conversely, this move could pay off. Bradley could make an incredible play that only he would be able to, and Martinez could catch fire. Betts may well play second flawlessly, just as he did in his cameo there earlier this season. There is a great deal of risk, but the potential reward is well worth it.
The question is – do the Boston Red Sox agree? If Mookie Betts is at second base, we will have our answer.
