The San Francisco Giants, long in need of robust leadership, have hired Farhan Zaidi as their new president of baseball operations, multiple insiders report.

After a long, drawn out search, it appears as though the San Francisco Giants have a new leader. According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, Farhan Zaidi, formerly the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been named the Giants’ president of baseball operations. Joel Sherman, Alex Pavlovic, Jon Heyman and Andrew Baggarly confirmed Schulman’s report shortly after it was released.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported early Tuesday that the Giants had made a formal offer to Zaidi, and that he had 24 hours to decide. Evidently, he decided to accept, and will now step in to the delicate situation within which the Giants find themselves.

Zaidi, a native of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, began his career in sabermetric analysis with the Billy Beane-led Oakland Athletics. He was soon promoted to assistant general manager before being hired by the Dodgers in 2014, the team with which he remained until Tuesday.

At the surface, Zaidi, 41, seems like a logical candidate to head the Giants. A relatively youthful, undoubtedly knowledgeable baseball mind, he was praised by Beane for his brilliance in being able to stake out the right transactions and making them happen on a logistical level.

Now armed with a franchise that has been, for the past few seasons, confused and luckless in many ways, Zaidi will have to realign a team that was once considered destined to become baseball’s next great dynasty.

Interestingly enough, Zaidi joins the San Francisco Giants having spent the last four years as an executive with the Dodgers, the Giants’ most hated rival. He will therefore quickly have to endear himself to the fanbase in order to gain traction and credibility within the complex baseball market established in San Francisco. While it might take awhile, Giants fans should see the benefits of having Zaidi on board in no time.
