San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres would be an attractive trade partner for the Chicago Cubs. The Padres have a big hole at third base. Wil Myers is not a third baseman. Carlos Villanueva provided some pop but not much else in his rookie season.

The Padres have also shown they will spend some money as they try to get out of the middle. They signed Eric Hosmer last year to a big free agent deal and they gave Myers a pretty sizable extension in his own right.

While the Padres do need pitching, having an excellent player at the hot corner is going to also help your pitching staff, especially young players like Eric Lauer and Joey Lucchesi, who aren’t necessarily power arms and who need quality defense behind them to be successful.

The Padres are flush with prospects in their loaded farm system, so the Chicago Cubs could pick and choose from what they wanted. Starting pitching? Outfield? Infield depth? The Padres check all the boxes.

At some point, the Padres have to make a push and having Bryant and Hosmer as your leaders to help some of your younger players go isn’t a bad place to start. They have other needs they have to fill, but this would be a solid start.
