General Manager of the New York Mets, Brodie Van Wagenen, has yet to engage in extension negotiations with his team’s ace-starting pitcher, Jacob deGrom.

Now-GM and former agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, made headlines in July as he stated that the New York Mets should extend or think about trading their ace-starting pitcher, Jacob deGrom. In the midst of the Mets’ struggles, deGrom expressed interest in a long-term extension. The righty recently displayed the same sentiment.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, deGrom is still getting settled as his former representation transitions into becoming his “boss”, but he still remains open-minded about staying in New York.

"“I really do enjoy playing in New York. The fans have treated me great. I enjoy taking the mound at Citi Field in front of them, and it’s rare that a guy spends his career with one team” Jacob deGrom told DiComo, “If that was something that they wanted to do, and me and [my wife] Stacey felt like it was the right move for us, then we’d be willing to definitely explore that.”"

Brodie Van Wagenen echoed these sentiments at the end of last week’s GM meetings, but the two sides have yet to begin negotiating terms.

This should be interesting to follow as we will see if their past relationship is a benefit or hindrance to their current situation. There clearly is a conflict of interest between the two (and among others) and because of this, there is writing in Van Wagenen’s contract stating that he cannot fight deGrom in arbitration, among other limitations (MLB.com).

This story will continue to develop as Van Wagenen and deGrom become more settled with their recent changes. Jacob deGrom is a Flushing fan favorite and the heavy favorite to take home the National League Cy Young Award. A move towards an extension will be a quick easy way to get fans and the team reinvested in the future of the club.

Even though Van Wagenen is trying to change the culture within the New York Mets, some of the old should stay for the long-term (ie deGrom and Syndergaard). When healthy, the duo has the ability to lead a dominant rotation. The Mets’ easiest path to relevance will be by building a contender around the two hard-throwing righties.

There will be more to add to this story in the coming weeks. As the offseason progresses, we should start to get a clearer image regarding deGrom’s future and Van Wagenen’s plan to get the New York Mets back to the playoffs.
