Once considered a future cornerstone for the San Diego Padres, Wil Myers is reportedly being offered in a trade with the Seattle Mariners.
For quite some time, San Diego Padres jack of all trades Wil Myers has been regarded as a possible franchise cornerstone. He was one of the top prospects in baseball for the Kansas City Royals before being the centerpiece of the James Shields trade. Similarly, he was considered a key part of the Tampa Bay Rays future, winning the 2013 Rookie of the Year award, before his trade to the Padres.
The Padres themselves have regarded Myers as a part of the future, signing him to a long term extension following his 2016 campaign. Coming off an All Star campaign in which he produced a .259/.336/.461 batting line with 28 homers and 28 steals, he appeared to be a future star. However, Myers has not progressed beyond that production, posting a 109 OPS+ in each of the past two seasons.
With Myers in the midst of a six year contract worth $68 million, the Padres are possibly feeling a bit of buyer’s remorse. According to reports, they have been shopping Myers, offering him to the Seattle Mariners for Jean Segura and Mike Leake, although it is worth noting that nothing is considered imminent.

It is interesting to note that the salaries would line up relatively well. Segura and Leake are owed a combined $85 million, while Myers is owed $64 million over the next four years. The biggest obstacle would be getting both Segura and Leake to waive their no trade clauses to facilitate such a move.
For the Padres, this move makes sense. Segura can play around the infield, and handle short until Fernando Tatis Jr.is ready. Or, conversely, Tatis could slide over to third, keeping Segura at short for the duration of his deal. Leake would give San Diego a veteran presence in the rotation, a solid mentor for the young pitching staff to learn from. he would solidify the middle of the Padres rotation, while potentially being a trade chip himself in another year or two.
For Seattle, the fit is less evident. While they are in the midst of a rebuild, and Myers is still a relatively young asset, he just does not fit that roster. Seattle has aimed at becoming a younger, more dynamic roster, targeting players like Justus Sheffield and former Mariner (for 83 minutes) Mallex Smith. Myers may be a respectable power hitter in the middle of the lineup, he does not have a position to play. First base, third base, and both corner outfield are occupied, leaving Myers without a place in the lineup.
The San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners have reportedly discussed a trade involving Wil Myers. That long term extension does not seem like such a bargain to the Padres any longer.
