The New York Yankees just acquired former MVP Giancarlo Stanton last season, could they turn around and deal him this off-season?
The New York Yankees got eliminated in the first round of the playoffs after winning over 100 games by the eventual World Champion Boston Red Sox. They reset their luxury tax payments by staying under last season and still added Giancarlo Stanton. The club has already added James Paxton in a deal. Could they turn around and flip Stanton?
Well, maybe.
"“There are also long-shot rumblings about the Yankees trying to move Giancarlo Stanton,” Cafardo wrote. “Obviously it’s a massive contract, but if the Dodgers ever felt they needed to do something splashy, Stanton isn’t that far-fetched, since that’s one team to which he would likely approve a trade.“Nor would it be far-fetched if the Giants wanted a big hitter to give their staggering offense a jump start, or if the Phillies decided to include Stanton on their list of superstars to acquire. Stanton has about $260 million remaining on his contract over the next 10 years. That would be cheaper than acquiring Machado or Bryce Harper."
The only way this makes sense is if the New York Yankees plan on signing Bryce Harper to play left field and then trade Stanton for prospects. They also have Clint Frazier who hasn’t had a full chance to play quite yet at the major league level due to injuries.
Even though the New York Yankees have a ton of right-handed power and even though they may be interested in Manny Machado, having Stanton with Aaron Judge and all the other right-handed power they have is fine when they are all elite players.
I would file this rumor under post-Thanksgiving not so hot stove. It’s kind of a quiet time right now because of the holiday, but this week it should ramp up.
