The St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies have all expressed interest in free-agent pitcher Andrew Miller, according to a recent report.
According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies are all showing some level of interest in free-agent reliever Andrew Miller. While there’s definite interest, Morosi points out that Miller doesn’t appear close to signing, at least for the moment.
Miller, 33, has been one of the more solid relievers since his breakout season in 2013. Since then, he’s racked up 53 saves and has pitched a total of 325.2 innings for the Red Sox, Yankees, Indians, and Orioles. Most recently, he tossed 34 frames to an ERA of 4.24 in an injury riddled season for Cleveland.

Especially noteworthy is Miller’s postseason performance. In 33.0 career postseason innings, he’s pitched to an ERA of 1.09 while striking out 48 and walking just 11, earning an ALCS MVP award for the Indians against the Blue Jays.
When healthy, Miller, who has at times been used in various unique situations, has the potential to be one of the more dominant relievers in the game. The question for interested clubs, though, is whether or not he can stay healthy, and whether or not he’s worth the contract that he might be pushing for.
MLB Trade Rumors predicated that Miller, a native of Gainesville, Florida, would sign with the Red Sox for $27 million over three years. Their prediction noted that he’ll “likely have his pick of contending clubs”, with the Phillies and Cardinals (to some degree), fitting that description.
Proven to be one of the more unpredictable assets available on this year’s free agent market, Miller should secure himself a multi-year deal with a contending club. Who that team is remains to be seen, though it should become more clear as the winter progresses.
