The New York Mets needed to add a veteran presence to their coaching staff. They have done so with the hiring of Jim Riggleman.

Heading into the 2019 season, one of the goals that New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen had was to put a more veteran presence on the coaching staff. That plan had already begun to take shape, with Gary Disarcina being removed as Mickey Callaway‘s bench coach, and being reassigned as the third base coach.

That bench coach spot has now been filled, as the Mets have brought in that savvy veteran presence. Long time manager and coach Jim Riggleman will be taking over those reins, serving as a sounding board and mentor for Callaway.

A coach since 1982, and a manager in the minors and majors, Riggleman has plenty of experience to give to the Mets. He has managed five different teams, including his stint as the interim manager for the Reds last season. He had been considered for the permanent role before David Bell was hired, and Riggleman was dismissed from the organization.

For all of his experience, he has not been a part of many winning clubs. Riggleman made the postseason only once in his 13 seasons as manager, and was swept out of the 1998 NLDS while at the helm of the Cubs. He only had two winning records as manager, although he did not have the best talent to manage.

However, all of that experience will certainly help Callaway as he looks to guide the Mets back to respectability. Riggleman has also had experience in helping to develop younger talent, something the Mets are likely going to need to do as they look to get back to the postseason. Having another voice, and one that has been though the battles, will only help the Mets for the long term.
