The New York Mets blockbuster trade for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz has been approved by MLB.

It appears the second blockbuster deal between the Seattle Mariners and a New York team is ready to roll. The long rumored deal between the Mariners and the New York Mets has been approved by Major League Baseball, with Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz set to head to the Mets. It’s just pending a physical. Here are the full details.

More from Call to the Pen

Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak will combine for $34 million over the next two seasons. Combine that with the $20 million the Mariners are sending the Mets’ way it comes out to $63 million over the next five years for Cano.

The New York Mets are giving up significant prospect collateral here in two former first round picks in Justin Dunn and Jarred Kelenic, who were the club’s third and fourth ranked prospect per MLBpipeline.com.

Another thing to keep in mind is as the New York Mets roster is currently constituted, Cano’s money after 2020 is the only money they have on books right now, so they do have flexibility moving forward.

With this deal, new GM Brodie Van Wagenen is clearly putting the Wilpon’s money where his mouth his. He says he wants to win now and in the future, and adding Cano and Diaz certainly can be the start of how the New York Mets can do that.

For the Mariners, I fully expect them to try and flip Bruce and Swarzak, if not now, then by the trade deadline in 2019.
