Arizona Diamondbacks scouting report on IF Andy Young
MLB Player Comp
As I watched game film on Young, the guy that kept coming back to me was a big name this postseason. In fact, he was the 2018 World Series Most Valuable Player for the Boston Red Sox!

Steve Pearce came from similar humble draft roots, albeit an 8th round pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he worked his way up the minor league system quickly, making his pro debut for the Pirates in 2007, just 27 months after he was drafted.
Pearce spent many years as a part-time player with the Pirates before working his way around the league in 2012. He finally broke through in 2014 with the Baltimore Orioles at age 31, hitting 21 home runs in 102 games, with a .293/.373/.556 slash line.
The 2014 season is the only year that Pearce has eclipsed 100 games played at the major league level or 350 plate appearances, but he’s now put together a 12-year career, smashing 90 home runs over 737 career games, with a .257/.336/.447 line.
Future Role
Like Pearce, Young may struggle to find his home in the major leagues, but as teams have found more of a role for bats like Pearce’s, there will be more opportunities for a guy like Young as he works to the major leagues.
For sure, his bat will play, so Young’s big thing will be finding his future defensive home.
He may have been a 37th round draft pick to start his pro career, but Andy Young has made himself into a legit prospect, and he could be someone that factors into the future for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
