The Miami Marlins have named Mel Stottlemyre Jr. as their new pitching coach under manager Don Mattingly.

According to an official team release, the Miami Marlins have completed their coaching staff, adding Mel Stottlemyre Jr. as their new pitching coach. The team also named Kevin Barr their new strength and condition coach, Jeff Livesey as their new assistant hitting coach and Trey Hillman as their new first base and infield coach.

Stottlemyre Jr., 54, previously served as the pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners since the 2016 season. Prior to that, he worked as the pitching coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, taking a break in the middle of his tenure with the D-Backs to work as a minor league pitching instructor.

Even before that, the native of Prosser, Washington, had a brief major league career as a member of the Kansas City Royals, where he appeared in 13 games and pitched to an ERA of 4.88 over 31.1 innings, striking out 14 and walking 12.

Stottlemyre was not retained by the Mariners after this season’s disappointing finish. Though he was effective at his post, earning praise from his fellow coaches and players, it appeared as though it was time to move on.

Stottlemyre, just like his new bench boss Don Mattingly, has ties to the New York Yankees organization, as does Marlins CEO Derek Jeter. Stottlemyre’s father, Mel, pitched for the Yankees for 10 years and also served as their pitching coach from 1996 to 2005.

Just like most personnel moves in baseball, we’ll have to wait until the season begins to truly assess the effectiveness of the Marlins’ new coaching staff, though it appears they made a pretty safe bet with their hiring of Stottlemyre.
