Could the New York Mets acquire J.T. Realmuto? The club has discussed a possible trade with the Miami Marlins, is this the next step in Brodie Van Wagenen’s plan?

Will J.T. Realmuto be the next player to join the New York Mets? Recent reports have indicated that Brodie Van Wagenen has been in contact with the Miami Marlins in regards to acquiring their All-Star catcher.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have discussed a deal centered around corner outfielder, Brandon Nimmo. He later cautions readers that a deal is not close as the Marlins have many suitors for Realmuto. Could a package centered around Brandon Nimmo provide enough value to make a deal happen?

Personally, I do not think so, as many clubs have better assets to offer the Marlins in return. Brandon Nimmo is a solid player, but I feel that the Marlins are looking for a future cornerstone. Realmuto is the best catcher in Major League Baseball and he is still under team control, aspects which are driving the Marlins’ demands.

More from Call to the Pen

After trading Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn to the Seattle Mariners in the Cano/Diaz blockbuster, the Mets farm system has become bleak and Brandon Nimmo may not be enough to entice the Marlins. The club would have to trade too much meaningful talent, hurting their current roster.

It is reasonable to assume that the club could build a better deal centered around young shortstop, Amed Rosario, or corner outfielder, Michael Conforto. Andy Martino of SNY.tv has recently downplayed the possibility of Rosario being moved, and Mike Puma of the New York Post recently reported that the Mets are unlikely to include Conforto in a possible trade.

Acquiring J.T. Realmuto may be the next step in Van Wagenen’s grand plan, but I do not see a scenario where the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins can come to an agreement on a possible trade.

On paper, I can see the team trading a package centered around Nimmo/Conforto for Realmuto, then signing A.J. Pollock from the free agent market. In reality, I feel that the club would be better suited by keeping their young outfielders and signing a Martin Maldanado type of catcher.

Next. A.J. Pollock the next move for Mets?. dark

As mentioned earlier, the New York Mets would have to dig deep down into their farm system or Major League roster to acquire J.T. Realmuto. The Mets need to acquire Realmuto in a deal that will help their roster, not hurt their overall outlook.
