The Boston Red Sox have fired an unforgivable salvo in their ongoing battle with the New York Yankees by sending several Hawaiian pizzas, with extra pineapple, to their rivals.

Over the years, the rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees has been fairly one sided. While the Red Sox dominated the early part of the 20th century, the Yankees won 26 championships before Boston broke the Curse of the Bambino in 2004. Since then, the rivalry has been more of a back and forth, with both teams winning the World Series, although the Red Sox have had an advantage there in recent years.

Not content to win solely on the diamond, the Red Sox went an extra step to add to the rivalry between the franchises. They made what was seemingly a nice gesture by sending the Yankees several pizzas. However, those pizzas were Hawaiian pizza with extra pineapple.

There are two kinds of people on this planet – those who realize that pineapple has no business being anywhere near pizza, and those that are wrong. Yet, somehow, the idea of pineapple on pizza persists, even if it is horrendous idea. Of course, even horrible concepts and items have their niche – just look to the efforts to ban the shift or the Red Sox continuing to play Sweet Caroline at games.

Anyway, I digress. The Red Sox and Yankees had previously kept their battles on the diamond, and while fisticuffs were occasionally involved, there was a degree of decorum involved. It was just the battles of two contending teams, with emotions understandably running high.

But to send pizza with extra pineapple to New York? That is just fighting dirty. It’s like Manny Machado throwing his bat in the vicinity of Josh Donaldson after two pitches inside. It’s the Pedro Martinez throwing of Don Zimmer of pizza toppings. This may enflame tensions like Juan Marichal going after John Roseboro, or Ty Cobb charging the stands to attack a one handed heckler.

The Boston Red Sox sent the New York Yankees Hawaiian pizza with extra pineapple. If that does not start a beanball war the next time these two teams play, nothing will.
