With the New York Yankees needing some middle infield depth, could they turn to Troy Tulowitzki?

With Didi Gregorius expected to miss quite a bit of time this season, the New York Yankees could use some middle infield depth. There is plenty of that in the free agent market, with all sorts of second baseman and shortstops available and another option just got added yesterday, as the Toronto Blue Jays decided to eat $38 million and release former All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

Tulowitzki missed all of last season due to injuries, but is apparently working out, and getting back into baseball shape. Whatever team decides to sign Tulowitzki, would only have to pay the major league minimum, since the Blue Jays will pick up the rest of the freight.

With the New York Yankees need for a middle infielder, and his inexpensive price point, Tulowitzki could be a fit for the club as an option.

More from Call to the Pen

Back in 2016, Tulowitzki was a three win player, putting up an OPS of .761. Tulowitzki grew up idolizing Derek Jeter and wears number two to honor the former New York Yankees captain.

If Tulowitzki doesn’t have the range anymore, and let’s say the New York Yankees want to move Gleyber Torres over to shortstop, Tulowitzki would be willing to switch positions himself.

"“Troy would be willing to change positions,” Cohen said. “He still sees himself as a shortstop and he grades out as a shortstop, but we did talk about the possibility of moving positions if he became a free agent.”"

This move would make a ton of sense for the New York Yankees at the major league minimum. If Tulowitzki can’t hit anymore in Spring Training, they can easily cut him. He can give the club another depth option, and GM Brian Cashman loves having as much cheap depth as he possibly can. For Tulowitzki, it gives him a chance to win, on a club that will be competing to win a World Series in 2019.

This can’t be the only infield move the New York Yankees make this off-season, because it carries risk, but adding Troy Tulowitzki wouldn’t be a bad idea.
