On Tuesday, Mark Feinsand reported that Carlos Beltran will join the Yankees as a special advisor to GM Brian Cashman.
The news comes on the eve of Manny Machado‘s highly anticipated meeting with the New York Yankees. Why is this relevant? Well, because Carlos Beltran is represented by Dan Lozano of MVP Sports Group.
Yes, the same Dan Lozano that represents none other than Manny Machado.
With the Yankees being reportedly favored to land Manny Machado, perhaps this is a move to further entice the 26-year old IF to come to New York. The Yankees are said to want Machado and vice versa, but New York doesn’t want to agree to a long-term record breaking deal with him.

On the timing of his new role with the Yankees and the Machado negotiations, Beltran said,
"“That is pure coincidence… I have been discussing this with Cashman for some time now, and on Monday I made the decision to accept it. My job will have nothing to do with Machado´s situation. But I did tell Cashman that I am available to help in whatever is needed and also with the recruitment of Machado if that is necessary.”"
Last season, Carlos Beltran was in consideration for the managerial position with the Yankees and is said to have been the runner-up for the position. After losing the managerial job to Aaron Boone, according to Roger Rubin of Newsday, Brian Cashman offered Carlos Beltran an opportunity to be his right hand man.
At the time, Beltran declined the position. However, It seems that after a year of consideration, Beltran has had a change of heart.
It is unclear exactly what Beltran’s role will be with the organization, but prior examples of special advisors indicate that he will spend a lot of time working directly with players. This seems like a perfect role for a guy like Beltran, who in his brief stint with the Yankees gained a reputation as a clubhouse leader and player-coach.
One thing’s for sure, It doesn’t hurt to bring in a guy with a wealth of knowledge back into a familiar organization. Beltran was a beloved figure with the Yankees then, and is sure to make just as big an impact now.
