The Minnesota Twins have plenty of younger players that are expected to receive a great deal of playing time. That does not mean they are not searching for a veteran presence in the lineup.

If the 2019 season was to begin today, the Minnesota Twins would have a much different look than in years past. Franchise icon Joe Mauer is gone, having retired following the 2018 season. Miguel Sano, one of the players expected to be a key part of the future in Minnesota, has been buried on the depth chart and may need a fresh start elsewhere. C.J. Cron and Ehire Adrianza are currently atop the depth chart on the right side of the infield. It will be a very different team taking the field come Opening Day.

However, the Twins are not necessarily done when it comes to building their roster. Given the relative youth on their roster, Minnesota is looking to add a veteran bat to the lineup. One of the names that is continually linked to the Twins is former Mariners designated hitter/outfielder Nelson Cruz.

If he is willing to take a one year deal, Cruz could be exactly the type of presence that the Twins lineup would need. Despite turning 38 years old halfway through the 2018 campaign, Cruz still put together an excellent year, producing a .256/.342/.509 batting line, belting 37 homers. Minnesota could use that type of power in their lineup next year.

Cruz could also have a positive impact on other players on the roster, particularly Sano. A fellow countryman from the Dominican Republic, the professional hitter could be a mentor for the Twins former top prospect. While Sano is reportedly working out furiously this offseason, having a respected veteran like Cruz to push him throughout the season could only help.

It is also possible that Cruz could be a difference maker in the division. While the White Sox have designs on contention, they have not done enough to upgrade the roster. The Indians are still selling pieces, with Corey Kluber still on the block. And, the Twins have performed well in odd numbered years lately…

Obviously, Cruz would not be a cure-all for the Minnesota roster. The Twins still need bullpen help, and could use an upgrade in the starting rotation. Yet, adding a player like Cruz would be a great place to start as the Twins look to get back into the postseason.
