David Wright is set to start a new role within the front office of the New York Mets. It’s good to have the Captain back in Queens.

At the end of 2018, the New York Mets said goodbye to their Captain, David Wright.

It was reasonable to assume that this goodbye would not last forever, as Wright has been an iconic piece of Mets’ history, but who could have thought that he would be back this soon?

On Monday, the New York Mets announced that David Wright would be released from their roster and would be joining the team’s front office. Wright is set to become a special assistant to Mets’ COO, Jeff Wilpon and General Manager, Brodie Van Wagenen.

Jeff Wilpon addressed Wright’s new role in a statement, via Metsblog.com.

"“David Wright is an iconic Met and will be forever remembered for his contributions on the field as well as his numerous charitable endeavors. David attended the recent Winter Meetings at the suggestion of myself and Brodie Van Wagenen where he contributed throughout with our baseball operations group and wanted to pursue this route. We are thrilled he will remain close to the Mets family and will be a great asset in this new role.”"

Was this the right move?

OF COURSE.

David Wright has always been more than just a player. His leadership and intellect were exhibited on the field and in the clubhouse, helping him earn his role as the team’s Captain.

These skills will translate well into Van Wagenen’s newly formed front office, as his playing background will add another interesting mind to the mix.

From a fan point of view, it is nice to see that David Wright will still be around the club, his playing career ended far too abruptly.  #5 is and will always be truly adored by the Flushing Faithful.

This move was yet another hole in one from Brodie Van Wagenen and Co.

Van Wagenen entered the offseason with the goal of reforming the culture in Queens. David Wright should be a tremendous asset on this front

Wright loves to talk baseball and more importantly, he loves the New York Mets. His smile will brighten up any room as his input will be valuable. In fact, Van Wagenen has already raved about Wright, as he referred to the former Met as an “invaluable resource” during their stint at the Winter Meetings.

What’s next for Wright, Van Wagenen and the New York Mets?

We will have to wait and see, but due to their successful offseason, optimism should reign supreme.

2019 should be a fun year for the Amazins’.
