Los Angeles Angels: Could the Stadium Deal Affect a Mike Trout Extension?
The biggest question regarding the Los Angeles Angels right now and in the near future is the possibility of a contract extension for Mike Trout.
As most know, Mike Trout is only guaranteed to be with the Los Angeles Angels through the 2020 season. That deal just happens to coincide with the recent news that the Angels will stay in Anaheim through 2020.
Earlier this offseason the Angels opted out of their lease of Angel Stadium in Anaheim, meaning that 2019 could potentially be the last year they play there.
But earlier this week, Bill Chaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported that the Angels will sign a one-year lease with the city of Anaheim to keep the club in Angel Stadium through 2020.
The extra time gives the two sides the ability to work something out for the future. From the Angeles perspective, you have to think that a decision on moving could depend on what Mike Trout wants.

The Angels have to use every little bit of motivating factor to keep the best player in baseball with the franchise. If Mike Trout likes playing in Anaheim, then I think the Angels stay in Anaheim. But if Trout likes the idea of maybe moving to a new city with a new ballpark, then I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that’s the direction the team decides to go.
I’m not saying this entire deal depends on Mike Trout, but the Angels would be foolish not to get his opinion on the matter.
He may very well say that he doesn’t care at all and that he plans on leaving no matter what, but to me, there is no way the team makes this decision without consulting with him.
I really think if Trout is going to stay, then I think the team stays in Anaheim. But if he is going to leave, then it kind of makes sense for the team to get a fresh start elsewhere, so that may be something to think about as more news comes out in the upcoming year about the plan for the Los Angeles Angels.
