With the 2019 MLB Hall of Fame announced on Tuesday night, we now look towards the top candidates for the 2020 class.
Getting elected into the MLB Hall of Fame is still a rare honor despite some of the questionable players who have been voted in recently. It is still the most exclusive Hall of Fame in all of sports.
In five of the past six seasons the writers have voted in at least three players into the MLB Hall of Fame. That’s after no one was voted in the 2013 voting.
Some players who just missed the cut in 2019 who could potentially get in on the 2020 ballot include Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Curt Schilling.
Bonds and Clemens obviously have the numbers to be first-ballot Hall of Fame players, but they are being held back by steroid suspicion. Their numbers continue to increase though, and with a weak incoming class in 2020 we could see them finally get in.
Schilling is a fringe Hall of Fame player in my opinion, but he’s also being held back by a lot of voters from off the field issues.
As is stated above, there aren’t a lot of players joining the ballot in 2020 that pop out at you. It will be more interesting to see if players who haven’t got a ton of attention in the past get a bump because of the weak incoming class.
That list includes guys like Todd Helton, Jeff Kent, Omar Vizquel, and Larry Walker.
But looks at the top three candidates joining the MLB Hall of Fame ballot for the 2020 class.
