The San Diego Padres pursuit of Manny Machado is getting more intense, as they are looking to meet him face to face.

According to Dennis Lin, the San Diego Padres want to meet with Manny Machado face-to-face in Miami before they get more involved.

As I wrote earlier this week, the Padres reportedly “checked in” with Machado, and now they are pursuing him with the intention of him playing third base.

Machado has met with every suitor except San Diego. He met with Philadelphia and the White Sox in the same week in early January of this year.

If you want to count the Yankees still as a suitor, he also had a quick meeting with them as well.

According to one of Lin’s tweets, there has been no offer yet, and the timeline of the meeting, if Machado decides to agree on one, is unknown.

Machado would play third base, as the #2 prospect in baseball Fernando Tatis Jr. is San Diego’s shortstop of the future.

Just because the Padres are interested in a meeting, does not mean Machado will agree to one, but this is an important step in the process for the Padres, especially if he is going to be their franchise player.

If Machado agrees to a meeting this would give Padres front office staff and ownership to ask Machado about his postseason antics and comments.

The main problem I would be cautious of would be when he admitted in an interview with Ken Rosenthal that hustling is not ‘my cup of tea’.

That would worry me if I was the general manager of the Padres because if they are going to pay Manny Machado over $180 million to be a leader on the team, then he has to hustle on every play or else that makes the Padres look bad because there are multiple players that will hustle on every play to fulfill the void at third base like Mike Moustakas and Marwin Gonzalez.

Before the San Diego Padres get serious about signing Manny Machado, they need to sit down with him and find out where his head is at or else it is a waste of time.
