Because of the recent government shut down, the Boston Red Sox decided to postpone their trip to the White House in Washington D.C.

According to this report on ESPN, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said he didn’t feel it would be appropriate considering the circumstances.

Originally, the Red Sox had decided to take the annual trip to the White House for the World Series winner earlier than usual. Kennedy stated then that this was the preference of the Alex Cora, the coaches, and the players.

Typically the World Series winner will visit the White House during the season when they are in town facing either the Baltimore Orioles or Washington Nationals.

That’s exactly what the Red Sox will do now as they rescheduled their visit for May 9, which is a scheduled off-day after a three-game set with the Orioles.

The Red Sox had planned to take a bus from Spring Training in Fort Myers, Fla. all the up to the capitol and back in the same day.

This decision to postpone was made just hours before President Donald Trump opened the White House back up.

Back on January 14 the Clemson football team visited the White House after their NCAA Championship title. At that time the White House was still shut down and they were served a variety of food from fast food locations that Trump paid for out of his pocket.

In some of the photos and videos, you can clearly see that at least McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s was on the menu.

Regardless of the spread that Trump would have put out there for the Red Sox, Kennedy did not think it would be appropriate to attend the White House when 800,000 federal employees were not receiving their paychecks.

So, now the Red Sox will have to make their trip to the White House during the upcoming season.
