In a unique move, the Baltimore Orioles will not have a bench coach in 2019.

The Baltimore Orioles named former Cubs coach Brandon Hyde as their next manager in the beginning of the offseason. With that in mind, you would think that he would want the most experience at the big league level possible to aide him on his coaching staff right?

Not so fast. Hyde’s coaching staff was announced this past weekend and there was one coach missing – the bench coach.

The Orioles interviewed Mets third base coach Gary DiSarcina for the position but ultimately decided not to fill the position.

There have been instances though when a manager did not have a bench coach including Jim Leyland not having one the majority of his time with the Tigers, and in 2015, the Pirates did not have one.

But this case is different because Brandon Hyde is a rookie manager. He has no managerial experience at all, so I would expect all of the coaching staff to fulfill the duties of bench coach.

The Orioles are going to be the worst team in the big leagues next season, as they haven’t made any even marginal big league additions this offseason.

Hyde made his staff of coaches who can develop the players at the big league level, with the hope that the Orioles can be winning more games sooner rather than later.

Hyde’s coaching staff consists of coaches with minor league experience.

Hitting coach coach Donald Long has eleven years of minor league managerial experience.

His pitching coach Doug Brocail was a pitching coach for the Texas Rangers and he was pitching coach for the Double A Corpus Christi Hooks.

First base coach Arnie Beyeler spent 13 years as a minor league manager.

The Baltimore Orioles going without a bench coach is definitely intriguing, especially when Brandon Hyde hasn’t even managed a major yet, but I doubt there won’t be a bench coach in 2020.
