MLB free agency: The future faces of regret

2. Cardinals Sign Andrew Miller
The Cardinals signed Andrew Miller to a 2-year deal worth $25 million, and an AAV of $12.5 million. Miller, 34, is known for his amazing 2016 postseason, but after that he hasn’t been himself. He had multiple trips to the disabled list due to shoulder and hamstring issues and a 60-day stint with right knee problems.
St. Louis may want to think about having Andrew Miller as the setup guy in the 8th inning with Jordan Hicks as the closer, at least until Miller settles into St. Louis. However, Miller did not exactly perform well in that spot in 2018. Last season Miller’s ERA was 4.11 in the eighth inning, which was 4 points higher than his ninth inning ERA (0.00).
He hasn’t exactly succeeded against the National League Central during his career. In just 23 games, the NL Central’s batting average is .284 and 28 runs scored on Miller.
Last yea,r Miller had an ERA of 4.24 and was able to thrown only 34 innings, which is not what a contending team wants. This is not the best move for St. Louis because they are guaranteeing him $25 million when he could barely get on the mound last season.
Remember the Cardinals could have went and signed Zach Britton for approximately the same AAV and for another year. Plus, the Cardinals know what they would be getting out of Britton after he settled in with the Yankees, but with an injury prone Andrew Miller, who knows?
