Prior to the start of the 2020 regular season, Major League Baseball will turn to Nike to supply the uniforms for each team.

Majestic Athletic has been the official in-game uniform supplier of Major League Baseball since the 2005 regular season, but Nike will take over ahead of the 2020 regular season (according to ESPN through the Associated Press).  In turn, Fanatics is now also set to become the new official manufacturer and distributer for the licensed versions of MLB jerseys and gear for consumers.

The new uniform deal was originally given to Under Armour, but Nike will take over instead on a 10-year deal with MLB.  Before Majestic supplied the uniforms for each team, previous uniform supplies were handled at different points by Russell Athletic and Rawlings.

Although it has not been announced where the well-known Nike “Swoosh” logo will be placed on each uniform, it will likely end up on the front of each uniform above the logo of a team.  This will be a noticeable change from the Majestic logo that is currently located in a less prominent position on the left sleeve of most uniforms.

The New York Yankees do not have a Majestic logo on their game worn uniforms for tradition purposes, so it will be interesting to see if the organization (or any others) will have the same option with the Nike logo.  Nonetheless, Nike recently took over for Adidas as the official uniform supplier of the National Basketball Association, and there have been some great, attention-grabbing City Edition uniforms for each team.

For example, this season, the Minnesota Timberwolves were provided with special Prince-inspired City Edition uniforms.  According to the Timberwolves, they worked together with Nike and the Prince Estate to create a black and pink jersey that celebrates ‘Minnesota icon Prince and the Minneapolis sound he pioneered.’  As there are many other great City Edition designs throughout the NBA, it would be great to see team throughout the MLB receive their own unique, alternate uniforms as well.

Uniform plans could always change once again ahead of the 2020 regular season, but Nike taking over could end up as a large positive if they introduce the same creativity with alternate uniform designs.  After all, with the popularity of uniform designs by Majestic for Players Weekend and other holiday games, Nike may hit a home run by bringing City Edition uniforms to the MLB.
