There was a time when Brandon Beachy appeared to be a future mainstay for the Atlanta Braves. Now, he is trying to revive his career with the San Francisco Giants.

There had been a time when Brandon Beachy appeared to be a future star for the Atlanta Braves. After being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2008, Beachy climbed through the Braves system, reaching the majors in 2010. Over the next two years, he posted a 12-8 record over 38 starts, posting a 3.07 ERA and a 1.118 WHiP, striking out 237 batters against just 75 walks in 222.2 innings. At 25 years old, he appeared to be a future star.

Then disaster happened. Beachy required Tommy John Surgery, and had numerous setbacks. After five decent outings in 2013, he required a second procedure, which he also struggled to return from. After that surgery in 2014, Beachy made a total of 14 appearances, with just two coming in the majors. After taking time away from the game, Beachy was back in action last year, posting a 3.55 ERA and a 1.263 WHiP for the New Britain Bees of the independent Atlantic League.

While Beachy did not draw many scouts to his games in the Atlantic League, he did manage to capture the imagination of one team. The San Francisco Giants have signed the reclamation project, adding him on a minor league deal.

The Giants may well be the perfect place for Beachy to end up. While he is not likely to start the season in the majors, the Giants will be missing Johnny Cueto for the 2019 campaign, and Jeff Samardzija ended the year on the disabled list. The projected back of the Giants rotation, including the likes of Chris Stratton, Andrew Suarez, and Drew Pomeranz, is not exactly a given either.

Likewise, the Giants do not have a lot of depth in the upper levels of the minors, making Beachy an interesting option if he can remain healthy. He could even prove to be an option in the bullpen, especially if San Francisco decides to trade either Will Smith or Tony Watson, if not both.

At this point, all Brandon Beachy needs is a chance to show that he is healthy, and can be a productive arm once again. The Giants are a team that could lead to the opportunity that Beachy is looking for, especially if he can get back to his previously dominant ways. It may be a long shot, but on a minor league contract, it is one that the Giants can take.
