Former top prospect Harold Ramirez signed with the Miami Marlins as they may be his best chance to finally reach the majors.

It was not that long ago that Harold Ramirez was considered one of the better prospects in baseball. He was a surprising inclusion in the deal that sent Francisco Liriano‘s contract to Toronto in exchange for Drew Hutchinson, a viable prospect that was included as enticement to take on the remaining $18 million that Liriano was due. Ramirez, at just 21 years old, had already reached AA, and looked as though he would be ready for the majors in short order.

However, Ramirez was unable to advance beyond AA with the Blue Jays. He dealt with leg and knee injuries that have sapped his speed and defense, but the stocky outfielder has still displayed an ability to hit. Last season, in his third year in AA, Ramirez posted an excellent .320/.365/.471 batting line. He showed a bit of power and it appeared that he was healthy once again, as he hit a career best 11 homers and stole 16 bases.

Even with that showing, he became a minor league free agent. The Blue Jays attempted to retain his services, even offering a $32,000 signing bonus, but Ramirez chose to sign with the Miami Marlins. Even though they offered him less to sign, at $25,000, the Marlins have something that he may not have received in Toronto – an opportunity.

There are plenty of positions available with the marlins. According to what Ramirez was told when signing, only Lewis Brinson is assured of a starting role heading into Spring Training. A solid showing in March, and Ramirez could break camp with the Marlins, getting that chance that seemed inevitable just two years ago.

Of course, there are concerns as to where Ramirez will be able to play going forward. At 5’10” and 220 pounds, he is not exactly the type of player that one would imagine as an outfielder. It is possible that he will need to move to first base in the future, or a trek to the American League as a designated hitter could be in order.

Until then, it is a matter of Ramirez taking advantage of the chance that is offered to him. That opportunity could come at the end of Spring Training, or at some point during the season. Hardly anyone on the Marlins roster has their place set in stone, and a prolonged slump could open some doors. All Ramirez needs is a chance, and to be ready when it comes.

The Miami Marlins may be the best place that Harold Ramirez could have landed. His long awaited chance appears to have finally arrived.
