The Miami Marlins may well have added their manager of the future, even if he will be serving in a front office role for now.

Even though the Miami Marlins have been in existence since 1993, they have gone through managers the way some people go through socks. Entering their 26th season, the Marlins have had 15 managers, none of which has served for four full seasons. That is where present manager Don Mattingly, who began his tenure with the Marlins in 2016, finds himself.

Given that the fourth year has not been completed for any manager in Marlins history, it may be time to look towards Mattingly’s successor. In fact, the Marlins may have just added him to the team, as they are expected to bring in Jorge Posada to serve as a special advisor to baseball operations.

At this point, Posada’s greatest strength is being friends with Derek Jeter. However, he was known for his leadership qualities during his tenure with the Yankees, honed over his 17 year career. Posada also has instant credibility with the players, a five time All Star and four time World Series winner, a fan favorite from his time in New York.

Those qualities could lend themselves to a potential role as a manager. While Mattingly also has those New York connections that Jeter appears to be fond of, the Marlins were a disaster last season. Despite their top players having been traded, Jeter’s patience is running thin. He is expecting improvement, and for the Marlins to get better – soon.

Those expectations could spell the end for Mattingly this season. If the Marlins get out to a slow start, as one would expect, Mattingly’s days could be numbered. If so, Jeter could have his replacement on hand, someone he can trust to be his eyes and ears regarding the roster and coaching staff.

The Miami Marlins may have their manager of the future in Jorge Posada. Even if he is in a front office role for now, circumstances can change.
