The San Diego Padres have reportedly signed Manny Machado to a 10 year-$300 million deal, so here is what the lineup will look like.

The San Diego Padres lineup was going to be full of youth in 2019 before Machado signed with the Padres, but now adding his bat in the lineup will make pitchers have nightmares.

Here is what manager Andy Green‘s lineup will look like on Opening Day.

More from Call to the Pen

  1. 2B Luis Urias
  2. SS Fernando Tatis Jr.
  3. 1B Eric Hosmer
  4. 3B Manny Machado
  5. RF Hunter Renfroe
  6. LF Wil Myers
  7. C Francisco Mejia
  8. CF Manuel Margot
  9. Joey Lucchesi

That lineup that I just listed is again full of young and very talented players. Now let’s go through each player and why they should be there.

First off is my projected lead off guy in second basemen Luis Urias. Urias has speed, and does have sneaky power, so I would put him at lead off because he knows how to get on base.

Tatis Jr. will be hitting second and playing shortstop. Now, I know that he is not supposed to be in the major leagues on Opening Day to give him the extra year of service time, but with the signing of Machado, I hope and believe that the whole notion that they want another year of control needs to and will go out the window because Tatis Jr. will be with the Padres for at least six years, and Machado came here with the expectation that the team wants to win now.

I have Hosmer batting third because this will give Machado protection, and this is where Hosmer is comfortable in the lineup.

Machado is batting fourth because I really like him batting in between Hosmer and Myers because Hosmer is a left hander and Myers is right, so a team can’t bring in a left to face three batters in a row starting with Hosmer because there are two righties coming in behind him.

Hunter Renfroe has the potential to lead the team in home runs for years to come, so I like him between Manny Machado and Wil Myers because he would be in the middle of two other right handed hitters, so best case scenario he will get better pitches to hit.

Myers is batting sixth to again give Machado some protection, and I am assuming that he is healthy and hitting well.

I have Mejia batting seventh because he has not really proved to be consistent at the plate, but I like that he can provide some power in the bottom of the lineup.

Margot is batting eighth in the lineup because he is very good defensively, but not as phenomenal at the plate, so I have him starting in front of Franchy Cordero because Andy Green will still want good defense in the outfield.

Joey Lucchessi is my Opening Day starter, so he is batting ninth. I like Luchessi on Opening Day because he is a left handed starter, so he can pitch against the Giants left handed hitters like Steven Duggar, Joe Panik, and Brandon Belt.

dark. Next. Padres sign Manny Machado to ten year deal

The San Diego Padres are not messing around, and mark my words: This team will make a playoff push for the 2019 season.
