Just because Adam Jones is gone does not mean that a tradition will not continue with the Baltimore Orioles.

Over the years, former Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones had created a tradition for the franchise. After the first Spring Training game, Jones would purchase platters of Popeye’s chicken for the team. It was a tradition enjoyed by everyone, one that helped bring the team together.

However, Jones is no longer with the Orioles, and is still languishing in free agency. This means that the chicken dinner was in jeopardy, that team building moment gone. That is, until Trey Mancini stepped up to the literal plate.

On a team that needs leadership, Mancini took a step to becoming one of the new leaders for the Orioles. He took it on himself to continue Jones’ tradition, making sure those platters of chicken were there after that first Spring Training game.

It would make sense for Mancini to step into the leadership void created via the departure of Jones and the Orioles commitment to their rebuilding process. He continued to show that he was one of the Orioles potential building blocks last season, posting a decent .242/.299/.416 batting line with 24 homers and 23 doubles over his 636 plate appearances.

Mancini will be an important part of the Orioles lineup for the coming season. He split time between left, first, and designated hitter last season, roles that will not change for 2019. Of course, his primary position for the coming year could depend on how well Chris Davis performs, as he is coming off of one of the worst seasons in MLB history.

Regardless of position, Mancini will be tasked with being one of the main run producers in the Orioles offense. Along with Mark Trumbo, Baltimore will need to see tremendous production in order to have a chance at a respectable season in 2019.

Trey Mancini has continued a tradition that Adam Jones started with the Baltimore Orioles. This may be the first step towards his evolution as a clubhouse leader.
