Tragedy struck the Boston Red Sox early Wednesday morning, as it was learned that Blake Swihart’s brother, Romell Jordan, had passed away.

There was the sense that something was not right immediately on Wednesday morning. The Boston Red Sox had canceled their media availability, and manager Alex Cora had his briefing rescheduled as well. There was a quiet, somber mood around the clubhouse, with the only explanation being that one of the players had a family emergency.

In the afternoon, the Red Sox announced that Romell Jordan, the adopted younger brother of Blake Swihart, had passed away. He was 23 years old.

Jordan had been a running back at the University of New Mexico from 2014 through 2017, missing the 2016 campaign due to a torn ACL. He got most of his playing time in that final season, with 56 carries for 267 yards and two touchdowns. He also had eight catches for another 64 yards. Overall, Jordan accounted for 636 total yards and five touchdowns during his college career.

He had moved in with Swihart’s family back in 2012, a classmate of Blake Swihart’s sister. Jordan had a difficult childhood, bouncing around to different states and families, as detailed by Yahoo.com. In New Mexico, he had found some stability, as the Swihart family took him in, with Blake’s parents becoming his guardians.

At this point, there is no word as to the circumstances surrounding Jordan’s passing. It was unexpected, as is usually the case with a young athlete. At this point, all that can be done is to keep the family in one’s thoughts.

Romell Jordan, the adopted younger brother of Boston Red Sox catcher Blake Swihart, passed away early Wednesday morning. Our condolences go out to his friends and family in this difficult time.
