Recent reports have indicated that the Los Angeles Angels have considered offering Mike Trout a 10-year, $350M deal. Why that offer would be too low to keep Trout put for the next 10 seasons.

Despite the fact that this offseason has been one of the slowest in recent memory, it should also be remembered as one of the most lucrative offseasons of all time. In total, between the top three deals handed out this offseason, $890M worth of contracts have been signed. Now, it’s being reported that the Los Angeles Angels have considered giving Mike Trout $350M over 10-years.

The problem is that even though a 10-year, $350M deal would make Trout the highest paid MLB player of all time, considering what the aforementioned three players got for their services, Trout would be severely underpaid.

The first of those deals was Manny Machado, who agreed to take his talents to San Diego for 10-years, $300M. For his career, Machado has amassed a 30.2 fWAR. Therefore, in terms of wins, the Padres gave Machado slightly under $10M per win.

Then, Nolan Arenado and the Colorado Rockies agreed on an 8-year extension worth $260M dollars. In terms of wins, Arenado (25.3) was also rewarded approximately $10M per win.

Finally, there’s Bryce Harper, who after weeks of toiling has decided to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies for 13-years, $330M. Again, in terms of wins, Harper, who has a higher fWAR than Machado and Arenado (30.7), was paid close to $11M per win.

Based on these three deals, teams have decided that each win a player produces is worth a touch over $10M. Mike Trout, for his career, has amassed an fWAR of 64.7. Therefore, if we were to value each win equally, Trout’s contract should be worth around $300M than what the Angels are considering offering over 10-years.

It sounds crazy to give a player upwards of $650M dollars, but the fact of the matter is that Trout is just way better than any player in MLB. In fact, he’s worth more than twice the amount of wins the $330M man, Bryce Harper is worth.

Next. Who is better - Mookie Betts or Mike Trout. dark

So, if the Los Angeles Angels do in fact submit a 10-year, $350M offer to Mike Trout, he should stand up an walk away.
