The New York Mets have added even more outfield depth, signing Carlos Gomez to a minor league contract.

Over the course of this offseason, New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen has worked on improving the roster. His additions to the bullpen and the lineup have given Mets fans the hope that they can contend in a tough National League East. After those trades and signings, Van Wagenen has focused on adding more depth to a roster that was sorely in need of quality options in case of injury.

More outfield depth was acquired on Saturday. The Mets came to an agreement with Carlos Gomez on a minor league contract, pending a physical.

After years of being a respectable part of the lineup, Gomez fell apart for the Rays in 2018. He produced a miserable .208/.298/.336 batting line, hitting 15 doubles and nine homers while stealing 12 bases. Gomez was decent in the field, however, showing above average range in right.

It is possible that he could get some playing time with the Mets. Projected starting left fielder Michael Conforto has battled injury woes in the past, as has Juan Lagares, who is expected to start in center. Yoenis Cespedes is going to start the year on the disabled list after heel surgery, and his return to the lineup is questionable. Keon Broxton has had his moments, but is still somewhat unproven.

Gomez, with a good showing, could force his way into the Mets plans. He is just a year removed from a solid .255/.340/.462 batting line, hitting 17 homers and 23 doubles while a member of the Rangers.

Even if Gomez is unable to crack the Mets roster, a strong showing could get him a chance on another team. Injuries happen, and players do not perform to expectations. A team in need of outfield depth could have interest in the former All Star, especially if he performs well during Spring Training. If not, he would be a solid depth piece waiting in AAA in case his services are needed.

The New York Mets have made another solid depth signing, inking Carlos Gomez to a minor league deal. With his track record, and the questionable health of their outfield, he could prove to be a valuable addition.
