Toronto Blue Jays Eric Pardinho elbow issues not a cause for concern yet
Toronto Blue Jays top prospect Eric Pardinho has some soreness in his pitching elbow, but the team says there is nothing to be worried about.
Eric Pardinho is expected to play a key part in the Toronto Blue Jays future. The young Brazilian right hander signed for a record $1.4 million signing bonus, having dazzled the baseball world with his performance for his country in the World Baseball Classic. Despite his small frame, Pardinho’s electric arsenal, including a mid 90s fastball, gave plenty of reason to dream that he would become a top of the rotation arm.
However, with his 5’10”, 155 pound frame, there is the possibility for injury. His excellent velocity, coupled with his size, is considered a possible recipe for disaster. Pardinho has already given the Blue Jays an injury scare, as he has been shut down with a sore elbow.
As it stands, the Blue Jays do not have a timeframe for when Pardinho will get back on the mound. They do know he will be in extended Spring Training when camp comes to an end, as he has yet to begin throwing once more.

This injury concern does nothing to alleviate concern that Pardinho will eventually end up in the bullpen. Given his high octane fastball, but smaller stature, it is thought that a move to the bullpen will reduce the strain on his body. However, the Blue Jays are currently hoping that, as Pardinho gets older, he will bulk up a bit, allowing him to stay in the rotation.
It is understandable why they would have such hopes. At just 17 years old, Pardinho dominated the Appalachian League, posting a 2.88 ERA and a 1.060 WHiP in his 50 innings. He showed an advanced feel for his repertoire, striking out 64 batters while issuing only 16 walks.
That advanced feel led many to expect that Pardinho could advance quickly through the Blue Jays system. Indeed, there had been the chance that he would start the year in full season ball, despite his age and probable innings limitations. That could still be the case once he is healthy and throwing again, although his elbow woes could lead to even more of a restriction on his innings this year.
The Toronto Blue Jays are hoping that Eric Pardinho will be a key part of their future. This injury may only slow the timetable for now, but it is worth keeping an eye on going forward.
