Similar to the Cubs, this is a big year for the Cardinals. After missing out on the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, Cardinals fans are getting antsy for another trip to the post-season. Being in the tough division that they’re in, they will need everything to break right to make the playoffs.

That being said, the Cardinals are in the unique position where they employ a tremendous amount of talent as well as depth. Therefore, they really just need a few of their players to step up and breakout to truly make them a favorite to win the division. The Cardinals have plenty of players with 3 WAR or better ability, they just need to see them actualize this talent.

The biggest question mark potentially in the entire division is Alex Reyes. The health and performance of the young flamethrower could very well determine the fate of the division. If Reyes can turn in a full, healthy season while maintaining his previous production, the Cardinals will be very tough to beat.

At the top end of the roster they will need two players in particular to perform above and beyond what is projected of them. Paul Goldschmidt needs to be a MVP candidate for the red birds this season and show how much he deserves his new 5 year/$130 million deal. They also need young phenom, Jack Flaherty, to take a massive step forward and become one of the better starting pitchers in the National League. With Goldschmidt anchoring the lineup and Flaherty anchoring the rotation, the Cardinals may very well be the favorites in the National League Central.
