Madison Bumgarner, 8/16/2015

On 8/16/2015, Madison Bumgarner (aka “MadBum”), like deGrom had a game for the ages. Unlike deGrom who only went 7-innings, however, MadBum’s start featured a rare modern-day complete game shut out.

Facing off against the Washington Nationals, MadBum not only pitched a complete game shut out, but he also contributed TWO of the FIVE runs the San Francisco Giants would score in their victory against the Nats.

In his first at-bat, MadBum lined a 2-1 pitch to right field in the bottom of the 5th inning, scoring teammate Kelby Tomlinson and extending the Giants lead over the Nats to 3-0. His next time up, facing off against Casey Jannsen in the bottom of the 7th inning, MadBum drilled a 1-1 pitch deep over the left field fence.

In the end, Bumgarner finished the game with an unbelievable hitting and pitching stat sheet:

  • Hitting: 2 H / 1 2B / 1 HR / 2 RBI
  • Pitching: 9 IP / 3 H / 1 BB / 0 ER / 14 K /

By hitting a home run and striking out 14 batters, MadBum became the first pitcher to accomplish such a thing in 38-years when a pitcher out of Philadelphia did it too. I’m talking about Hall of Fame pitcher and all-time great Steve Carlton.
