Tom Seaver, 5/29/1973

46 years before Jacob deGrom accomplished the feat, another New York Mets great did it as well. That’s right, Hall of Fame Mets pitcher Tom Seaver, arguably one of the greatest pitchers of all time, added this accomplishment to a long list of accomplishments on his resume in 1973.

Before we recap the dramatics of Seaver’s game in 1973, lets quickly recap the Hall of Fame pitchers list of accomplishments.

  • Rookie of the Year
  • 3x Cy Young Award winner
  • 3x ERA Title
  • 12x All-Star
  • Member of the 1969 “Amazin'” Mets

On 5/29/1973, in a game against the San Francisco Giants, the game was scoreless entering the 5th inning. Deciding to take matters into his own hands, Tom Seaver homered off of Jim Barr, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead.

The next inning, Seaver would squander the lead by serving up a 2-run home run to Willey McCovey. In the end, the Mets would win the game by a score of 6-2, preserving a complete game win for the Hall of Fame pitcher.

Seaver would finish the game with 9 IP, 2 ER, and 16 Ks.

One year earlier, the great Bob Gibson would become 5th pitcher ever to accomplish the feat.
