Baltimore Orioles: Chris Davis Close to Another Atrocious Record
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is having arguably the worst stretch of any player in MLB history. Now he’s approaching yet another atrocious record.
If baseball had the equivalent of the Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies), which are handed to the worst films each year, the Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis would walk away with every single one of them.
It’s gotten to a point where you have to wonder why Davis wants to play anymore. I mean, why would somebody subject themselves to this type of abuse? Especially someone who has earned close to $100M in his career already.
There has to come a time in a players career where they tell themselves that they’ve accomplished everything they wanted to accomplish and that it’s time to walk away.

Chris Davis had his time in the limelight. He’s led MLB in HRs 2x, slugged .500 or better 2x, he even finished 3rd in the MVP voting in 2013. That season, he led MLB with 53 HR and 138 RBI, while slugging a career-high .634.
Now, Davis finds himself in the spotlight again. This time for the worst of reasons.
First, he sets the all-time record for the worst batting average for a qualified player by hitting a whopping .168 in 2018. Then, he breaks the great Eugenio Velez‘s record of 46 consecutive at-bats without a hit by going hitless in his last 49 consecutive AB and counting.
Now, according to Bill Baer of NBC Sports, Davis is approaching yet another atrocious record, which also happens to be held by Velez: consecutive games without a hit to start the season. The anti-Joe DiMaggio record.
Velez set the record in 2011 when he went hitless in 23 consecutive games to start the season for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the team’s first 9 games, Davis has also gone hitless. If we dig further back, he hasn’t had a hit since September 14, 2018. That’s 15 games ago.
I have to be honest, I don’t want to see Davis another atrocious record. It’s like beating a dead horse. Maybe it’s time for him to count his blessings and walk away from the Baltimore Orioles and MLB for good.
