The New York Yankees walking wounded added more depth on Friday, signing Logan Morrison to a minor league deal.
The New York Yankees have been absolutely snakebitten by injuries in the early part of the 2019 campaign. Their Injured List is essentially an All Star team of its own right, with 12 players already sidelined. The depth to the Yankees depth is being sorely tested.
With that need for even more depth, New York has made a move. Logan Morrison has been signed to a minor league deal, with an opt-out clause that can be exercised if he is not on the major league roster by July 1.
Morrison had a disastrous 2018 campaign. In his only season with the Twins, he posted a .186/.276/.368 batting line, hitting 15 homers and 12 doubles in his 359 plate appearances. However, Morrison was hampered by a torn labrum in his hip, which required surgery in August, requiring an eight month recovery period.

Back in 2017, Morrison had an excellent campaign. He posted a .246/.353/.516 batting line, hitting a career best 38 homers and driving in 85 runs. Morrison found himself as part of the Final Five for the All Star vote that season, and certainly deserved more consideration for the MidSummer Classic than he received.
For now, Morrison will report to extended Spring Training, and then will head to AAA. While the Yankees have a need at first base currently, Greg Bird should be healthy by the time Morrison is ready for game action. However, Bird has not exactly been a bastion of health throughout his career.
If nothing else, Morrison gives the Yankees another veteran presence in Scranton that can step into the lineup if needed. Should he be needed at the major league level, and Morrison proves to be healthy, this minor league signing could be a steal.
The New York Yankees have added more depth by signing Logan Morrison to a minor league contract. Even though he is not yet ready to contribute, this deal could pay dividends.
