On Friday, the New York Yankees signed a rival of Gary Sanchez, Logan Morrison to a 1-year minor league deal. Was this really necessary?

The New York Yankees are like “The Walking Dead” this season, limping their way in and out of games and coming out, mostly, losing. In an effort to add more depth to the roster, the team announced on Friday that they have signed veteran 1B Logan Morrison to a 1-year minor league deal.

The deal, per Jeff Passan, is worth $1M if Morrison is added to the MLB roster and includes an opt-out by July 1.

What stands out about this deal isn’t so much that the Yankees signed a 1-time 38 HR hitting 30-year-old 1B, its that the team signed a rival of catcher Gary Sanchez. You see, when Morrison wasn’t invited to the 2017 Home Run Derby, he decided to passive-aggressively dump all his frustrations out on Gary.

"“Gary shouldn’t be there,” Morrison said. “Gary’s a great player, but he shouldn’t be in the Home Run Derby….I remember when I had 14 home runs,” Morrison said. “That was a month and a half ago.”"

At the time of the Derby, Gary had 14 homers while Morrison had 10 more, 24. By seasons end, in 122 games Gary hit 33 HR, while Morrison finished with 38 HR in 149 games.

In response to Morrison’s hissy fit, Gary only had this to say: “They gave me an invitation. That’s something I have no control over. It’s not my fault he didn’t get selected.”

The saga doesn’t end there, however. In 2018, while with the Minnesota Twins, Morrison was asked about his comments in 2017 by the Pioneer Press of St. Paul.

"“They didn’t like the Gary Sanchez thing with the Home Run Derby,” Morrison said to the Pioneer Press of St. Paul last April. “But you can’t fix stupid, you know?”"

Prior to the signing being announced to the public, Gary Sanchez was seen taking BP at Yankee Stadium. To be frank, he was launching them to outer space.

Perhaps this was a genius move on behalf of Yankees GM Brian Cashman. Another diabolical plan by the man that runs the Death Star, Grand Moff Tarkin?

Probably not, just some much-needed added depth.
