Toronto Blue Jays prospect Bo Bichette left Monday’s game in AAA after taking an inside fastball off his left hand.

One of the Toronto Blue Jays top prospects, Bo Bichette stepped into the batter’s box during the third inning of the Buffalo Bisons and Syracuse Mets night game. He would end up leaving the game after taking an inside fastball off his left hand during that at bat, shaking his hand in pain before being attended to by Bisons training staff.

The first prognosis when a player takes any type of high speed pitch off their hands is a broken bone. The bones in your hands have little to no protection in terms of fat and muscle, and a solid object can easily break a bone in your hand (like an inside fastball).

While I am not a doctor, at first glance I was hoping it would only be one bone broken in his hand, and not multiple.

More from Call to the Pen

It would be confirmed on the next day, April 23, that Bichette did indeed have a broken bone on one of the fingers in his left hand.

While Bichette did escape serious injury by not taking the ball off of his head/neck area, a broken hand/finger will most likely sideline the #2 prospect in the Blue Jays organization. He has not been put on the injured list as of this article being written, but he could be sidelined for a long period of time while he recovers from his injury.

Coming into the game, Bichette was slashing .250/.310/.404 with 1 home run and 8 RBI. He got off to a slow start to begin the year, but has been playing well over the past ten games with a few multi-hit affairs and some RBI’s.

While Bichette was not slated to make an arrival in Toronto within the immediate future, there was potential for being a late addition to the squad when the rosters expanded in September. This injury may potentially derail his major league debut until 2020, especially if he is sidelined for a prolonged period of time.

While there is a positive in that the broken bone is not on his throwing hand, I am sure Bichette is not having a pleasant Tuesday after taking a fastball off the hand.
