MLB Power Rankings: Madness from the first month of the season
The opening month of the 2019 season had a few surprises. This week’s MLB power rankings reflect those unexpected starts.
Virtually every site puts together their own version of the MLB power rankings at the beginning of the year. These rankings are based on a projection of the moves a team made in the offseason, and how they are expected to fare moving forward. Of course, those rankings are just a matter of speculation, an extrapolation of the way the offseason went.
Now, with the first month having passed by, it is interesting to look back at some of those rankings. Yes, quite a few teams were what we thought they were, either positively or negatively. Teams like the Red Sox and the Mariners have been major surprises this season, for completely opposite reasons.
Do these starts mean anything? While it is difficult to imagine that the Red Sox will perform this badly for the entirety of the 2019 season, there are few positives. Likewise, even if the Mariners regress, their rebuild may not take as long as previously thought. There is a light at the end of that tunnel.
What does that mean for our MLB power rankings this week? Let us take a look back at the first month of the season and try to provide context.
