Examining Two Options

Now let’s imagine you are playoff bound team mid-season.

The organization enters mid-June/July and teams are fighting for the top spot in their respective divisions. They may be dealing with injuries, they may not.

A pitcher like Keuchel could come in and be the extra arm in the rotation the team would need to take them into the postseason.

He won’t have the wear and tear of playing the whole season and could be a depth option to use moving forward for just the one year.

Now let’s examine the reasoning for option number two.

You’re a rebuilding team looking to turn to the future with young prospects. Dallas Keuchel still hasn’t signed with a team and his asking price has come down from what he was asking for in the offseason prior.

The organization could look at him and see him as a long term option, but now he is cheaper to sign because he has been sitting on the shelf for a few months.

One of the positives for this situation is that the team can sign him, throw him in the minor league system, and call him up when he is fresh and loose to face professional MLB hitters. The team has him for a long term contract and doesn’t need to rush him.
