The Milwaukee Brewers appear set to get a major upgrade to their rotation within the next couple of weeks.

The Milwaukee Brewers starting rotation is in need of reinforcement. Although Gio Gonzalez has pitched well, he, Zach Davies, and Brandon Woodruff do not inspire confidence for a deep run in the postseason. Jhoulys Chacin has struggled throughout this year. The Brewers need help.

That help is one start away from coming. On the heels of his excellent outing on Friday, Jimmy Nelson will make one more rehab start in AAA before returning to the majors.

Prior to missing the end of 2017, and the entire 2018 campaign due to a shoulder injury, Nelson appeared to be establishing himself as an ace. He had posted a 12-6 record with an excellent 3.49 ERA and a 1.249 WHiP. In 175.1 innings, he struck out 199 batters while issuing only 48 walks.

Although it is difficult to project he will match those results this season, he has done well in his rehab outings. In his 14.1 innings, Nelson has allowed six runs on ten hits and six walks, striking out 16 batters. He has had some command issues, with three wild pitches and having hit three batters, but has looked better lately.

A look at Nelson’s recent outing had plenty of positives. He reached 94 MPH with his fastball, close to where he was in the majors prior to his injury. More importantly, his command has started to improve, as Nelson has been able to spot his pitches where he wants them.

His return cannot come soon enough for the Brewers. Milwaukee is currently a game back of the Cubs for the NL Central, but they are four back in the loss column. Likewise, they have a 1.5 game lead in the Wild Card chase at this point, but will need more ammunition to succeed in the playoffs. Or, for that matter, to even reach the postseason.

Jimmy Nelson is one start away from returning to the Milwaukee Brewers. His return cannot happen soon enough.
