The Miami Marlins have been one of the hottest teams in baseball lately, and are riding a four game winning streak.

It is amazing what a little offense can mean for the Miami Marlins. Owners of the worst record in baseball, an offense whose ineptitude had not been seen since the 19th century, and a collection of nothing in the lineup, the Marlins seemingly could not hit their way out of a wet paper bag.

That is unfortunate, especially as the Marlins have an interesting pitching staff. Caleb Smith appears ready to be one of the better pitchers in the National League. Trevor Richards went from the Indy Leagues to having arguably the best changeup in the majors. Sandy Alcantara and Pablo Lopez are two exciting young arms. The pieces are there, if only they could get some runs on the board.

That has happened over the past four games. With a total of 18 runs scored over that span, the Marlins have won each of those games. Their four game winning streak is currently the second longest in baseball at the moment.

More from Call to the Pen

The Marlins have won each of these games in a variety of ways. On Friday, their 8-6 victory over the Mets, they had an offensive explosion. Those eight runs were the most they had scored in a game since their 12-9 defeat at the hands of the Phillies on April 27.

Then, over the next two days, it was the pitcher’s turn to dominate. The Marlins scored a total of five runs, but it was enough as they shut out the Mets in both games. On Tuesday, the Marlins overcame the adversity of blowing a ninth inning lead to come back and take the 5-4 victory in 11 innings.

Yes, this winning streak has taken place against the Mets and Tigers, two teams that are below .500. And yes, the Mets appeared to give up in two of those games and the Tigers are riding a seven game losing streak. However, given the status of the Marlins, a team whose ineptitude was literally on a historic pace, any victories are a great sign.

Next. The Marlins power outage. dark

The Miami Marlins have the second longest active winning streak in the majors. Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel after all.
