One of the biggest surprises of the 2019 MLB season so far has been the New York Yankees right-handed starting pitcher Domingo German, who has been tearing it up.
Through 10 games, New York Yankees starter Domingo German is 9-1 and has won his last six starts. His nine wins this season are the most by a pitcher so far. His ERA is 2.60 and his WHIP is 0.98, which is fifth and fourth in the American League respectively. He has struck out 57 batters through 51 1/3 innings.
The 26-year-old is having a breakout season. But the question is, is this a flash in the pan or is German the real deal?

German came to the Yankees in 2014 along with Nathan Eovaldi and Garret Jones in a trade with the Miami Marlins, where the Marlins received Martin Prado and David Phelps. He missed the whole 2015 season due to Tommy John Surgery and spent 2016 and the most of 2017 in the minors. He debuted in September 2017, strictly appearing out of the bullpen.
In 2018, German started his first game for the Yankees. The Dominican Republic-native struggled a lot, spent some time in the bullpen and in AAA.
However, this year, he looks like a completely different pitcher. His improved performance has helped make up for the loss of New York’s ace Luis Severino, who has yet to play this season due to a shoulder injury. He is not expected to play until after the All-Star Game.
His loss was huge for Yankees, but German has done a terrific job in his absence. He has helped New York to a 32-17 record and first place in the AL East.
Nobody knows if he can maintain this caliber, but at this rate, German is going to make the All-Star team, and possibly be an AL Cy Young candidate at the end of the season.
